WHITE WINES

LIGHT/MEDIUM BODIED

2015 Sierra Grande Sauvignon Blanc, Boutinot, Central Valley, Chile

A fresh and crisp wine with ripe citrus fruit. Packed with lime zest, lemon and kiwi fruit flavours. Think of cool glacial streams and enjoy the refreshing, racy acidity on the finish. The altitude of the vineyards ensures that there is minimal intervention so no chemical sprays or irrigation - only glacial streams. Steep slopes and old vines mean that the grapes have to be hand-harvested. This is a real crowd pleaser and pocket pleaser! Lovely on its own or perfect with fish and chips!

Style: Light/Medium Bodied
Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc
ABV: 11.5%      Case Price: £81   (Equivalent to £6.75 per bottle)

2013 Esencia de Fontana Chardonnay, Uclés, Northern Castile, Spain

Think not of over extracted, over oaked Chardonnay, but a wine demonstrating the primary fruit flavours and true character of this grape: fresh orchard fruits, delicate mineral notes with good fruit concentration and refreshing acidity. The creamy mouthfeel is from the time the wine has spent on its lees and adds to the appealing nature of this wine. Try with seafood and white fish dishes – especially good with deep fried chilli squid – yum!

Ripe orchard fruits on the nose with hints of honey and peach. Lightly spicy with good weight and texture - balanced by citrus acidity and baked apple and pear notes. The Conviviale Pinot Grigio is the result of a selection of the best quality grapes from mature vineyards, which were hand harvested during the first 2 weeks of September. The wine was aged for a period of 3 to 6 months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks before bottling. This classic Pinot Grigio works well as an aperitif or accompanying salads and fish dishes.

Produced from a dozen different pinot noir clones, many of which are 30 years old, the fruit is grown on gradually descending north facing terraces which are warm during the day and cool at night. This allows the fruit to ripen fully but slowing producing fruit with great complexity and structure. Bright aromas of blackberries, raspberries and black cherries are supported by an underlay of chocolate and spice. Savoury elements, of roasted meats and grilled mushroom, should become more prominent as the wine ages. 2010 Côtes-du-Rhône Réserve, Domaine Clos du Caillou, Rhône, France - Organic

This wine comes from the estates oldest vines, located inside the Clos du Caillou property. In 1936 when the deliminaters of the zone came to visit, they found the gates closed and therefore ignored the enclave. This enclave should have been classified as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, so the wine is always priced at less than it deserves (incidentally, their Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve retails at over £120 per bottle!). This bloc is cultivated traditionally with very low yields and techniques respecting nature (minimal intervention and organic practices). The nose is dominated by liquorice and red berry aromatics. SPARKLING WINES

2014 Alasia Moscato d'Asti, Araldica, Piedmont, Italy

Sweet and gently sparkling with delicate aromas of honey, flowers and fresh grapes. The palate reveals further aromatic apricots, grapey notes and a soft mousse. Delightful refreshing acidity on the finish balances the sweetness. The wine is fermentation in pressure tank under temperature control, then the fermentation is deliberately stopped by chilling and filtration to retain the luscious natural sweetness. This produces a light and delicate fizz that makes delicious summer drinking with fresh fruit salads or meringue based puddings.

Champagne Pol Roger, Brut Reserve, NV, Epernay Champagne

The definitive house-style, composed from 30 still base wines drawn from at least two vintages and the three Champagne varieties blended in equal portions. On the nose, the Champagne is dominated by white flowers, green apple, brioche and a trace of minerality. Whilst the palate shows notes of stone fruits, a certain nuttiness and a hint of honey supporting the freshness of the acidity. Normally not released until it is 3 years old, however UK stock receives an additional 6 months post-disgorgement ageing so it is ready to drink upon release but cellaring for a few years will reveal greater depths. Utterly delicious!

These are followed by rose and pomegranate notes which complete the complex, intense aromatic profile. The palate is distinct and full: delightful freshness and a voluptuous body with a touch of mint and pink grapefruit note prevailing. Exquisite!

2010 Bodegas Olivares Dulce, Jumilla, Spain (50cl Bottles)

Paco Selva and his family have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of their wines at Bodegas Olivares. Blessed with a high proportion of some of the world’s largest collection of ungrafted old Monastrell vines, their vineyards also benefit from the coolness brought by the higher altitude. A judicious use of French oak barrels brings just the right amount of tightness and gives another dimension to the rich and spicy wines produced here. The Dulce bursts with the flavours of dates, figs and liquorice. A wonderful alternative to the usual fortified suspects, this is the perfect accompaniment to cheese.

It is then matured in bottle for a minimum of 3 years prior to being released for sale. It is the only Port to have the bottling year on its label. Although ready (and delicious) drinking now, this will continue to improve for the next decade gaining complexity as would a Vintage Port. Churchill’s Crusted Port has a concentrated berry aroma with rich complex palate. Ideal with plum pudding or strong cheese such as Camembert and Stilton, or on its own.
